Board
members present: Brian Mullally, Dave
Hurwitz, Jana Edwards, Ray Dertz, Suzanne De Jong, Diane Burrows, Kevin Koch,
Marilyn Brainerd, Nancy Watson, Dave Fortune, Casey Jones. Residents attending: Howard Brainerd, Jennifer Collins, Lisa
Torres.
Minutes of the
April 11, 2005 meeting: The minutes incorrectly stated
that the Lake Doster Lake Association meetings are held on the 4th
Monday of the month – they are held on the 4th Wednesday of the
month. Two residents voiced concern
about a statement in the “Safety” section of the minutes where residents asked
not to go too slow just to prove a point.
They felt this sent the wrong message -that drivers should be urged to
slow down and that slower is always better, especially to protect
children. The board agreed that
preventing speeding is the highest priority, but felt that corrections to the
minutes were not required. The minutes were approved as corrected, Ray moved,
Marilyn seconded, all in favor.
Treasurer’s Report
(Brian Mullally): In the last month, there were $
1,798.63 in expenses. The current
balance of the checking account is $1,965.86, and the savings account is $
2,331.74. In regard to purchases, the
non-profit ID number should be provided – Brian has this number. In response to a call from a resident, the
checking balance is at a low point due to the November party and other
expenses. Member dues are coming in and
should restore the balance.
Front Entry Sign (Dave Fortune): Plans are being reviewed with
the LDDC and the Lake Doster Golf Club and should be finalized soon.
Annual Meeting
Planning: Four members of the board have finished
their terms or resigned. The board is
urged to ask neighbors to join the board.
There was a discussion about methods for continuing community services
after the lake is acquired. There has
been no final decision but we have been working with the idea of having two
organizations – one to manage the lake and enforcement issues, and one to plan
social activities. Some board members
felt that, given the difficulty of getting residents to volunteer on the board,
it may be better to combine the two organizations. Another possible approach is to keep the organizations separate,
but reduce the number of people on the LDHA (as it will be addressing fewer
matters). An ‘ad hoc’ committee was
formed to review the issue and report back to the board. The board will seek the opinions from
residents at the Annual Meeting.
Gun Plain Township
(Casey Jones): There will be two boat safety classes offered by the Allegan
County Sheriff’s Office on May 21 and June 11, 2005. Details will be provided in the newsletter (see page 5). Casey also noted that the mowing and
clearing on road sides is done by the County only on County roads.
Maintenance (Ray Dertz): The April 30th Spring Clean-up day was not well
attended only one couple came out to help, and another helped on the following
day. Others noted that they cleaned the
beach and other areas on other days. It
was also noted that many residents are constantly picking up trash while out
for walks. The board thanks all
residents who make this extra effort.
The need for a spring clean-up day will be reviewed at future meetings.
Ray received a question as to whether there could a dumpster in the spring as
well to hold yard debris. The board
felt it was too expensive to do twice a year.
Lake-friendly “Weed and Feed” is still available although several have
been sold. The buoys and rafts should
be installed this week. An anchor was
lost in the lake over the winter – a diver may try to retrieve it. Empty plastic Clorox and large orange juice
bottles are useful for marking equipment – if you have any please get them to
Ray. The tent needs repair – Ray will
get quotes for repair, replacement, or renting from an outside company. The tent is available to residents for
parties at no charge, but you must be an LDHA member (dues paid) and cannot
take the tent out of the community.
Contact Ray well in advance of your party to schedule use of the
tent. Thanks to Howard Brainerd for
cutting up the dead trees on Midlakes Blvd.- someone is coming to pick them up.
Social (Diane and Kevin): The
next social event is the Fourth of July Party – Volunteers are really needed –
it takes about 30 people to set-up, cook and serve food, direct games and
activities, and clean-up. Last year
there were not enough people to direct activities and some had to be dropped –
so please try to help this year. Larry
Kunkle has set the fishing contest for Saturday, July 2 – details for both
events will be in the newsletter.
Water Quality (Dave Fortune): Water
quality will be tested this month. Lake
spraying will be done by the LDDC by the end of May – notices will be posted in
the neighborhoods.
Membership &
Dues (Nancy Watson): As of May 8th, $1500 in dues has been
received. Please send in your dues
($30) if you have not yet done so. Thanks to all who responded to the request
to correct personal information for the directory! Carole Kellogg’s effort to insert individual tags in the
newsletter seemed to catch attention - the response was good.
Newcomer’s (Marilyn Brainerd): Marilyn has just returned and will be catching up with greeting
newcomers. If you know of new families
in your neighborhood please contact her at 664-3388.
Lake Acquisition (Brian Mullally): The LDLA
has received $4000 in the last month; the lake acquisition fund now has about
$25,000. There is still a significant
deficit for the fund, which is being used to conduct the necessary surveys,
title searches and other legal matters to transfer the ownership of the lake. For more information on the lake acquisition
effort, go to the website at lakedoster.org. Contributions should be mailed to P.O. Box
125, Plainwell, MI 49080. There have
been three meetings in individual subdivisions and more are coming up. Also monthly meetings of the LDLA are held
every 4th Wednesday of the month.
All are welcome and urged to attend.
Other
notices: A trash receptacle will be placed at the beach for the summer but a
Port-a-potty will be brought in only for the 4th of July and End-of- Summer parties.
Respectfully
submitted, Jana Edwards
